Sono queste le parole di Penne Laingen, moglie di Bruce, incaricato degli affari esteri c/o l’Ambasciata USA di Teheran nel novembre del 1979 quando studenti Iraniani presero in ostaggio 59 americani all’interno dell’ambasciata. Saranno liberati solo dopo 444 giorni.
La moglie Penne, in una intervista in cui mostra la sua calma, un po' come i parenti degli ostaggi riuniti nella piazza a Tel Aviv, sconsiglia di intraprendere qualsiasi azione violenta che potrebbe generare ulteriore violenza da parte dei rapitori.
Il nastro giallo diventa cosi il simbolo della speranza per il loro sicuro ritorno a casa.
L’idea del nastro giallo scaturisce da una canzona popolare “Tie a yellow Ribbon Round the ole oak tree” scritta, per scopi diversi anche perché antecedente al fatto, nel 1972 dal gruppo di Tony orlando e Dawn e reinterpretata da Frank Sinatra.

Dopo il rapimento di 230 ostaggi (alcuni rilasciati in questi giorni) da parte di Hamas nell’orrenda aggressione perpetrata nei confronti di Israele il 7 ottobre 2023, le famiglie degli ostaggi, riunite nella Piazza davanti al Museo di Arte Moderna della capitale economica israeliana, hanno diffuso l’usanza del nastro giallo che ormai si trova quasi ovunque inclusi gli alberi della città soprattutto lungo la Rothschild Boulevard.

These are the words of Penne Laingen, Bruce’s wife, in charge of foreign affairs at the US Embassy in Tehran in November 1979 when Iranian students took 59 Americans hostage inside the embassy. They will be released only after 444 days.
His wife Penne, in an interview in which she shows her calm, a bit like the relatives of the hostages gathered in the square in Tel Aviv after October 7th, Penne thought that demonstrations of violence and anger would not help the hostages’ predicament.
Yellow ribbons became the symbol of hope for their safe return.
The yellow ribbon refers to a popular song, “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree,” written in 1972 and released in 1973 by the group Tony Orlando and Dawn. Many artists subsequently covered the song, like Frank Sinatra:

After the kidnapping of 230 hostages (some released in recent days) by Hamas in the horrendous aggression perpetrated against Israel on 7 October 2023, the families of the hostages, gathered in the square in front of the Museum of Modern Art in the Israeli economic capital, they spread the custom of the yellow ribbon which is now found almost everywhere including the trees of the city especially along Rothschild Boulevard.
